Diaphragmatic Breathing (Belly Breathing) Made Simple

3–10 minBeginnerFree guided session below

Diaphragmatic breathing, also called belly breathing, means breathing deep into your belly so your diaphragm does the work instead of your chest and shoulders. Place one hand on your chest and one on your belly: only the belly hand should rise. Most of us forgot how to breathe this way somewhere along the line. It's the foundation for box breathing and 4-7-8 breathing.

Guided practice

One hand on your chest, one on your belly. Be curious, not critical.

Step by step

How to do it

  1. 1

    Hands on

Lie down or sit. One hand on your chest, one on your belly.

  2. 2

    Breathe into the belly

Breathe in through your nose so your belly rises and your chest stays quiet.

  3. 3

    Let it fall

Breathe out slowly through your nose or soft, pursed lips and feel your belly sink back.

  4. 4

    Keep it soft

No forcing. If it feels awkward at first, that's normal. Your body is remembering.

  5. 5

    Practice daily

Five minutes a day and it slowly becomes the way you breathe without thinking.

What it gives you

Benefits

  • Full-body relaxation you can feel in one session
  • Breathing stops feeling shallow and tight; every breath finally lands
  • Releases the tension parked in your neck and shoulders

After doing it

As belly breathing becomes your default, you breathe fewer, deeper breaths all day, sleep more soundly, and feel more settled in your own body. It's the foundation every other technique stands on.

Get the most from it

Tips

  • Lie down with a book on your belly and watch it rise and fall.
  • If your chest keeps rising, slow everything down.
  • A lovely way to wind down before sleep.

Make it daily

Turn this into a daily habit

Seven days is all it takes for this to stop being something you try and start being how you feel.

  • Feel it working in your very first session. Most people notice the shift before the timer ends.
  • By day three, the thing you came for starts showing up: deeper sleep, steadier nerves, real energy.
  • By day seven, calm isn't something you chase anymore. It's how you move through your day.

Breathing deeply into your belly using your diaphragm, instead of the shallow chest breathing most of us slip into when we're stressed.

The hand on your belly rises and falls while the hand on your chest stays mostly still. Give yourself a few days; it gets easier.
